Passion (Morgan)
Jan. 9th, 2026 07:42 pmOur best-beloved high school Brit Lit teacher, Dr. M, told us all kinds of stories about these people. He was, I think, a proponent of the "teach the kids literature and literary history through sensationalistic gossip" mode that I found in salon many years later -- and it works! Even decades after Dr. M's class, I came in knowing enough that the names and many of the love-affairs (especially the most sensationalistic ones) were familiar, though of course I didn't know very many details. Even (especially?) Byron; though we never read any Byron in class, he was certainly a very sensational figure. (I think Dr. M's plan was that we would go off and read Byron on our own -- the same way that he announced, when we did the Canterbury Tales, that he was forbidden to teach us "The Miller's Tale" because of it being too R-rated, and we all promptly hared off and read it outside of class -- although I found Byron enough not to my taste that I never read very much of him even with that.)
What I was struck by most about this book was just how trapped the women are by... everything, by societal expectations, societal disapproval, family situations, the constant spectre of sickness and death; all the women were more-or-less (sometimes less) sympathetic but were placed in situations where they were either miserable or making other people miserable or both. (I can't quite say that about the men -- there were a couple of men that were not very sympathetic -- but at the same time you could see them all being trapped too.) But I didn't get the impression that the author was trying to make a point about that in particular, or at least not any more than any other point; I think this was just how it was.
A few notes about some of the women POV characters:
Augusta Byron (Leigh) - I knew enough to draw in a breath when her half-brother George was mentioned, even before the reveal of her last name :P Anyway, she is awesome, my favorite -- a truly nice character but never boring, and you can see why she and Byron got along so well; their bantering conversations in the book are really some of my favorite bits. Definitely one of the characters where I was Put Out that her life was as miserable as it was :P Lord Byron himself was charming and dark and you could both see why everyone fell in love with him and also that it must have been awful to have been his wife or lover (though in Augusta's case, mostly because of the societal issues).
Mary (Godwin/Wollstonecraft) Shelley - Intellectual and intense, the Mary POV sections were perhaps the most compelling for me, and also could be frustrating, in the way that when you empathize with a character, you don't want the character to do the stupid things that you know you would do (or maybe actually did as a young person) in her place :P I felt like she had a lot of extremely understandable strong feelings! And often you could see how the strong feelings were acting against her best interests! Percy Bysshe Shelley, on the other hand, was... well... there's an xkcd about guys like him :P I also really enjoyed her scenes with Byron, of all people -- very platonic, no attraction, and that's actually very refreshing, to me as well as to the characters.
Caroline Lamb - these were my least favorite sections. I remembered from Dr. M that she had some struggles with mental illness, and Morgan makes her manic behavior quite as sympathetic as possible -- but it still wasn't all that fun to read for me. William Lamb was less of a presence in the book but seemed, well, passive and patriarchical but mostly pretty reasonable, especially in comparison to Byron and Shelley. Not that this is saying a whole lot!
Annabella Millbank (Byron) - Byron's long-suffering wife. Annabella is clearly -- in fact textually -- even less of a reliable narrator than the others. I found the style of her sections really interesting -- they're distant and mannered and very distinct from the other characters' POV, and really point up how she fabricates her own story that may or may not (often does not) match up to reality, but certainly matches up to her own interests. And at the same time Byron was just terrible to her! But one can see how she is almost optimally ill-suited to him!
Fanny Brawne - I think part of why Fanny was here was just as a contrast to the other characters. (Keats doesn't interact particularly strongly with Byron and Shelley.) She seems to be the only one, out of all of them, whose issues don't arise out of an intensely conflicted adolescence, whether it was because of her circumstances (Mary -- I haven't mentioned her father, William Godwin, but he was a piece of work in the novel, one of those guys who can totally twist everything to "rationally" argue how it benefits him; the type is familiar) or because of her personality (Caroline). She is the only one where it seems like she actually maybe had fun. (Well, Augusta may have had fun in her childhood -- but the way the chapters are laid out, the awful parts of her life get a lot more documentation.) Of course one knows it all has to go wrong, because Keats and Brawne, but after reading about everyone else it's almost a relief to just be dealing with death instead of death plus a whole ton of dysfunction. (Of course, there are hints that if he had lived, perhaps this love story too would also have devolved into dysfunction. But maybe it wouldn't have. For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!)
But, in conclusion: no-fault divorce for Harriet Shelley and Annabella Byron, please and thank you, and hey, I'll take it for Mary Shelley too, and alllllll the antibiotics and NO bloodletting for not just Keats and Byron but also all the babies and small children who died in this book >:(
Also, I did a little reading about the next generation and they all seem rather interesting too; I want the sequel :PP
Re-Listen Liveblog: The Secret Commonwealth, chapters 23-33 (end)
Jan. 9th, 2026 10:27 pmRoundup part 3 of my Secret Commonwealth re-listen. It’s the last 6 hours, and it took 4 work days to get through. (My hold on The Rose Field was 4th in line when it started, and now I’m up to 2nd.)
No cute critter photos in this one. We’re just slouching toward the finish line to be done.

NS: Sebastian Stan cast as Harvey Dent/Two-Face
Jan. 9th, 2026 06:50 pm
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Sebastian Stan will be playing Harvey Dent in The Batman: Part II.
Bucky jokes aside I think this is great casting.

Note: In retrospect, I think there are nuances to be had about the distinction between the "main bloodline" furry fandom, and the "animal xenofiction" bloodline.
The "main bloodline" originates from 1970's "funny animal fandom" associated with humanoid animal cartoon characters. (hence why skunks were popular in early furry culture - Pepe Le Pew, and in the 90's Fifi La Fume, were characters from popular funny animal cartoons!) This strain of furry fandom had a prominent NSFW scene from the beginning, and has been widely gawked at since the early internet for its association with particularly idiosyncratic kinks and fetishes, relative to other online subcultures. I can't imagine that many NSFW writers on Ao3 are into their whumpees turning into pooltoy versions of themselves and getting inflated big and round, you know? At some point, airplane, robot, and other inorganic characters became accepted parts of the scene, as long as they invoked animal shapes like snouts and paws; I'm pretty sure airplanes are so popular because they already kind of look like they have snouts.
The animal xenofiction bloodline is largely focused on sapient but non-humanoid animal characters; its associated "formative media" features casts of non-humanoid animals who talk (although that speech is not understandable to humans, in settings where humans exist), and who may (especially in literary examples) display elaborate cultural traditions despite their lack of hands. Characters anthropomorphizing objects or made of artificial materials are relatively rare, compared to the funny animal bloodline. Animal Xenofiction fans, and media fandoms within the Animal Xenofiction, are generally less interested in NSFW than either "mainline" furry fandom or human-centered media fandom, and when kink appears it's in relatively mainstream forms like Dom/Sub and sadomasochism.
It is more stereotypically associated with children and teenagers, especially teenage girls, than "mainline" furry fandom, and this reflects the difference in bullying the two strains have received. Main bloodlines, from what I remember of the aughts, have largely been lolcow'd for being weird and offputting autistic adults (and ugly and fat - didn't matter if this wasn't true, it was assumed) with childish interests. This is a type of harassment that, in media fandom spaces, targets both male and female fans (and both transformative and curative fans) who are in their adult years. Xenofiction strains - such as "wolfaboos" - were often bullied for being emo kids who made edgy and overpowered OCs with unnatural colors and tragic backstories, being too into alt fashion and anime-esque narrative melodrama; sometimes this bullying even came from other xenofiction furries, who felt they were superior to their peers for sticking to biological accuracy in character design. I'm sure many Dreamwidth users can see the parallel to how teenage girls in fandom have been historically treated - by people outside fandom, by men in curative fandom, even by other women in transformative/shipping-culture fandom, who sneered at "Mary Sues" as affronts to canon and literature.
These strains of "furry" have melded into each other over time, but I believe treating them as synonymous is a category error on par with treating anime fandom "yaoi" fans like they're just a weird mutant subspecies of K/S-descended "slash" fans - they have convergently evolved similarities, and they have overlapped hybridized over the decades, but they are different animals, with their own evolutionary histories and quirks stemming from that history.
With that out of the way, let the original post stand unaltered. In addition, under the cut,
tresfoyle gave me permission to add her commentary from when we were both on Cohost; her commentary is in the readmore under mine.

Anime Check-in: Akatsuki no Yona ep. 1-3
Jan. 9th, 2026 04:27 pm
So this is a Korean ambience setting. Yona is a spoiled princess whose mother died when she was younger. Her cousin Soo-won comforted her and she fell for him, but her father the King doesn't want him to be King, plus the Queen was murdered and he doesn't want Yona to go through what he did. Hak is the third in the childhood friends trio and he and Yona have a bickering relationship.
On the night of Yona's 16th birthday, Yona goes to try and convince her father to let her be with Soo-won only to walk in on Soo-won murdering him. Hak is able to step in when Yona is about to be killed as well.
Episode 2: How can you say that the King was weak but somehow managed to stab his own brother to death?? Even if the older brother did something bad he would do the right thing and sentence him first at least. Maybe the older brother was involved in the Queen's death? He seemed so kind though.... But as we can see with Soo-won, that's not always what's going on underneath. I bet Soo-won didn't even try to learn why the King supposedly did it before killing him.
Poor Min-su. T_T
Episode 3: Mun-deok and Hak's dynamic is hilarious.
So the King asked Hak three years prior to be Yona's bodyguard but he said no at first because he hates the politics.attitude surrounding nobility.
Yona was only 12 and that guy was perving all over her. 😭And Hak had already developed feelings for Yona. I think he's like 15 here? Looks like the King would've been happy if they were together like Hak lied and said to get the perv off her back.
I definitely think Soo-won was genuine before his father died, though I wonder when he found out that the King killed him? Because that's when her probably really started scheming.
I'm enjoying this pretty well so far, I'm glad they're taking the time to show Yona's grief and I look forward to seeing how she develops from here.
A Quick Thought On Nice Moments With Strangers
Jan. 9th, 2026 10:03 pm
2026 has consisted of a few events that have contributed to my ever declining faith in humanity. I’m sure it’s done the same for many of you, so I thought today would be a good time to tell you about some positive interactions I had with strangers this past week, to remind us that not everyone is terrible, and we can still have nice moments in our personal life, even among strangers.
Yesterday, I drove to the next town over to get a coffee, and en route saw a man sitting on his front porch playing the banjo. On my return journey home I was stopped at the stoplight in front of his house, and I rolled down my window to listen to him. He was very talented, playing the banjo beautifully. He looked up at me and I gave him two thumbs up out my window and smiled at him. He smiled and returned to his skillful playing. The light turned green and I drove off.
A few days ago I was at Meijer, and a couple walked past me while I was looking at the bagels. The girl said “oh, bagels actually sound really good right now,” to which the guy replied, “you should grab some bagels.” She came up next to me and started looking at bagels, too.
“You should totally get bagels,” I reaffirmed.
“Well I saw you looking at them and thought they did sound good!”
“Did you see the cranberry ones? That’s what I grabbed, they sounded delish.”
“Ooh, those do sound good.”
“I’m about to go grab strawberry cream cheese to put on them.”
“Yum what a good combo!”
“Have a good one!”
“You too!”
I walked away, smiling.
So often I am completely indifferent to (or even resent) everyone else that’s at the grocery store, but sometimes it’s good to remember that the other people at the store are also just girls who want a bagel, like you. And normally I don’t strike up conversation, because who wants to be talked to while they’re grocery shopping, but something in me just sought connection with my fellow bagel shopper in that particular moment.
Just a couple days ago, a stranger came to my house to buy a microwave I had listed on Facebook Marketplace, and she said I had the most beautiful home on the block, and we had a brief conversation about moving troubles and how the house looked great. It made me smile. I’m glad she said something so nice, it really brightened my day.
Multiple times this week alone, strangers walking down the street or driving past me have waved, or nodded, or smiled, and it’s such a good recognition of, “hello, other human, I see you.”
Such small acts of acknowledgement that you exist and everyone else is a person like you. I don’t know, it just makes me feel better, and I thought maybe it would make you think of the last time a stranger smiled at you, too.
Feel free to share nice interactions in the comments, I’d love to hear them. And have a great day!
-AMS

Meme Question
Leitmotifs of the year:
- Return of the Drabble
- Is This Original Fic I See?
- Old Fandoms, New Fandoms
- Gifting Things
Most popular story:
By every AO3 metric: The Winter of Our Contentment, because The Witcher fandom is still active af apparently.
Observation 1. This was the year I archive-locked all my fic and the overall drop in hits, kudos and comments compared to last year has been noticeable. Why are people still relying on reading without an account when the invite codes are relatively easy to get?
Observation 2. The second most popular fic by hits is Dribble which is a filthy pwp. I'm amused by the difference between the kudos to hit ratio between this and The Winter of Our Contentment, ~10% vs ~27%, which suggests that many people are apparently reluctant to make it known that they read and liked filthy porn. Which is hilarious to me. Baby, this is fandom, let go of your shame.
My best story this year:
Metamorphosis for the theme. Better the Demon You Know and Protector for the world-building. when to fold'em and Vernal for the voices. Mercury Lane for the sense of place. Antigen for the concept. climbin' up to reach your land as a personal favourite.
Hardest story to write:
I struggled with the ending of the climbin' up to reach your land quite a bit. Emotionally speaking, probably Metamorphosis.
Easiest story to write:
Most of the drabbles I wrote in one sitting, often one after another, and it was good to get back to that instant sense of accomplishment. like what you (don't) see I wrote in one sitting too after being smacked by the MV. Year of the Cat was also a quick write. And Given came out pretty quickly under deadline pressure. (i'ma) make a move was a fun breezy fluff piece.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Ugh, idk... Metamorphosis? But like it was never going to get a lot of attention given the theme and the ambiguous relationships. Maybe climbin' up to reach your land as I think it would appeal to anyone who's into incest-ships. Tribute has a bad ass female war general. Just saying.
Most fun story to write:
I had fun with a lot of the drabbles, but especially Awkward, Together, Mismatched Magic
Fluffiest story:
Mismatched Magic, no finer details than yours, Year of the Cat (kittens! scampering!). Actually The Winter of Out Contentment is pretty damn fluffy, seeming as it's essential 4,5k of huddling for warmth. Erm, okay, safe landing. (i'ma) make a move is cotton candy. Fuck, listen, fluff and angst are like my bread and butter.
Most angsty story:
*points above* But maybe Metamorphosis takes the win here too we it's high on hurt, thin on comfort. Special mentions to Whispers, Veil, Shatter, electric dreams, like what you (don't) see, Antigen (though has a hopeful ending)
Sexiest story:
For outright porn, Dribble. For slow burn and an extended, gentler sex scene with touch starvation and first time feels, touch me slow, touch me sure
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Ehhhh *waves hand* Idk, there were some morally grey fics (when to fold'em) and plenty of incest (Flashback, Choice, climbin' up to reach your land, Struggle, Grow Together) but maybe A Kiss. For the sadism.
Biggest Disappointment:
As always, not finishing some of the longer wips, or poetry really though I did get back to that a little bit. I stopped writing entirely for about six weeks after losing Tricks, and I'm not like disappointed about that per se, just acknowledging that it happened and I'm still slowly coming back.
Biggest Surprise:
I did not expect to a) write in an anime fandom and b) for that to go as well as it did, so for Second Chance to get into a fourth place of 'most popular' was fun to watch. Writing as much Original Fic as I did.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
Idk, nothing where I brought clear receipts... Wait, wait, I did, sort of, for Celebrate Tonight. (no, not for that!). I also don't think I wrote anything particularly unexpected. Ooooh Kat likes power dynamics! What a surprise...
Best summary?
I've used a quote from the fic as a summary for almost every single one this year so mostly what's left is this:
In which Akihiko decides that Mafuyu and Ritsuka need role models for a healthy relationship. You know, because he's such an expert on the topic. Somehow, this becomes Haruki's problem.
( Best First Line - I refuse to pick just one )
( Best Last Line? - Lines. LineSSSS )
( Favourite line/passage of the year? - sorry not sorrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyy )
Story I haven't yet written, but intend/hope to:

Snow, but no Snow Day
Jan. 9th, 2026 08:18 pm
Remember how I was being salty about our lack of "significant" snow? Well, it all arrived at once last night. We got hammered. The picture is my view as I stepped off what would transpire was the final service to arrive at my home station last night. All the trains were cancelled today.
However, the children were furious this morning because despite the high school and the other middle school in the area being closed, their school was...open. And, cruel parents that we are, we made them attend. A third to half of their classes were missing, some of whom we know live within walking distance of the school. (Our children don't.)
I'm not sure how long we can expect to be in the doghouse, but I suspect it's going to take more than a packet of Haribo to get them to forgive us.
